If there is one word that encapsulates the essence of Sri Sathya Sai Baba’s life and teachings, it is “love”. His life, message, ideals, and humanitarian works all converge on this singular principle—love. His life itself is a testament to this message, embodying love in every aspect. He is often described as the epitome of love—love personified. According to him, “God is love; live in love,” urging us to begin, fill, spend, and conclude each day with love as the pathway to God. Just as the moon is visible only by its own light and not by a candle’s, God, the embodiment of love, is experienced solely through unconditional, pure, selfless love focused unwaveringly towards Him.
When asked about the greatest commandment, Lord Jesus Christ emphasized, “Love God with all your heart, mind, soul, and strength; and love your neighbor as yourself.” The Apostle St. Paul echoes this sentiment in his letter to the Corinthians, stating that among faith, hope, and love, love stands supreme.
Sri Sathya Sai Baba too teaches that love is the source, the path, and ultimately the very goal of life. Therefore, when we lead lives infused with love, our existence becomes sanctified.
In this world, no virtue surpasses love. Love embodies Truth, Righteousness, and wealth. The universe originated in love, is sustained by love, and ultimately merges back into love. Every atom finds its origin in love. Despite the countless powers such as atomic and magnetic forces in this world, the power of love transcends them all. Life without faith and love is devoid of meaning and purpose. For humans, love is life itself and encompasses everything. Yet, humanity often misunderstands love, equating it solely with physical relationships. A mother’s love for her child is affection. The love between husband and wife is infatuation. Love among friends and relatives is affection. Love for material possessions is desire. Love directed entirely towards God is known as devotion.
Love should be expressed through selfless service. This service should take the form of providing food for the hungry, comfort for the distressed, solace for the sick and suffering. A compassionate heart is revered as the temple of God. Love is a divine gift bestowed upon every human being, intended to be utilized for the betterment of society. Unity is crucial for the advancement of the community, and individuals should share their love generously with others.
